UPDATE – Congratulations Liz, Daphne, and Sandy!  I’ll send details over soon. When does a film become more than just a film?  When it creates a community and starts a mass movement for positive change.  The documentary “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” was released just about two years ago and since then, nearly 6 million people have watched the film, drank over 93 million glasses of fresh vegetable juice, and lost over 6 million pounds and counting.  On top of that, 55,ooo of those people are now medication free. When I first saw the movie when it came out at the theater (yes, I’m the guy who goes to see health documentaries in the theater), I had no idea that Joe Cross and his team would be so successful in their mission. Never seen “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead“?  The title suggests that it would be a depressing documentary, but it’s anything but.  The movie tells the story of Joe Cross, an overweight 40-something from Australia who came to the U.S., went on a month-long juice fast to heal himself from chronic disease and obesity and hired a film crew to follow him around.  Before this month of juicing, Joe was eating the typically indulgent Standard American Diet, full of saturated fats, processed foods, and the like – and he had developed a rare auto-immune disease called chronic urticaria, which resulted in red, blotchy, and tremendously itchy rashes all over his body.   Armed with a juicer hooked up to an outlet in the trunk of his car, Joe travelled across the country (including an initial visit to the incomparable Dr. Joel Fuhrman) to speak to people about health and healing, and ended up meeting a morbidly obese truck driver named Phil who suffered from the same rare autoimmune disorder.  Joe was able to help Phil lose over 200 pounds (he weighed 429 initially) and reduce his symptoms of urticaria significantly.  Talk about “paying it forward.” Why did I go see this movie in the theater initially?  I started learning about the power of fresh vegetable juices about four years ago when a close family friend of mine sent me a package of Norman Walker’s books on health, along with The China Study.  That stack of books flipped the switch in my brain and sent me down the path that I’m on today.  I bought a juicer soon thereafter and have been including fresh vegetable juice in my nutrition regimen almost daily ever since (sometimes I’m not as consistent as I’d like to be).  Flooding my body with raw nutrients and enzymes helped me turn around my health, eliminate mental cloudiness, clear up my skin, and has fueled me with more energy than I typically know what to do with.  I’m not a huge fan of these fad 3-day juice cleanses where people then go back to eating all the same garbage they were eating before, but integrating fresh vegetable-dominant juices into your lifestyle can produce enormous benefits. In the spirit of paying it forward, the friendly folks at RebootWithJoe.com (the Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead online community) have provided me with 3 awesome giveaway items: A bundle with the DVD, the companion book, and the Reboot Nutrition Guide Another copy of the DVD And a sweet Juice With Joe to-go cup Here are your options for entry:  Leave me a comment under this post, take a picture of the fresh juice you’re drinking and tag me on Instagram using @theplanteaterjeff, or send me a tweet with a description of the juice you’re drinking.  Make sure you use the hashtags #planteater and #FSNBDAY as well. I’ll pick 3 winners at random within the next couple of days. If you haven’t seen the movie, make sure you watch it HERE on YouTube for free for a limited time.  Pass it along to anyone you know and love that could use some help with their nutrition as well. Meanwhile, make yourself a juice!  I know you probably have a juicer that you don’t use, and if you don’t have one, go to Bed Bath and Beyond or Target or something and buy one – it’s one of the best devices you can possibly have in your kitchen.  They’re also giving away juicers on the RebootWithJoe site, so you might want to enter.  Here’s the recipe for Joe Cross’s famous Mean Green Juice to get you started: Ingredients: 1 cucumber 4 celery stalks 2 apples 6-8 leaves of kale 1/2 lemon 1 tbsp (or about 1 inch) of ginger (more if you like it spicy) Directions: Wash all produce well.  You can peel the lemon if you want, but you don’t have to.  Juice it all, starting with the kale first.  Enjoy as is or over ice and feel the powerful nutrients and energy coursing through your veins.
